My name is LaShonda Hall, I am 39 years old. I have been incarcerated for
13 years. My story is similar to many naïve young girls who thought they had found
the man of their dreams. I am a first-time non-violent offender serving 45 years and 8-
month sentence. I am thankful for The First Step Act, because this bill reduced the
amount to serve to 42 years and 7 months.
I was originally charged with conspiracy in a drug ring. Because I refused to testify for
the prosecutors against a person I know by the name of Johnnie, the government
threatened me that I would die in prison, along with Johnnie. True to their word, the
government superseded the indictment and gave me four more charges of money
laundering, aiding and abetting Johnnie with intent to distribute and possession of a
924c, and (PWITTD) marijuana. My role was insignificantly minor.
Since my incarceration, I have spent my time rehabilitating myself. While some look at their prison
situation in the negative, I focus on all the positive things I can accomplish and overcome. I have used this
time to become a better woman, mother, daughter, and fighter to get my life back. I have taken many
classes and received many certifications that I will use upon re-entry to society.
My recent accomplishment has been completing and receiving certificates for ServSafe and Food Handlers.
I also have my Electrical Core Safety, complete with my NCCER card, along with my Electrical
Apprenticeship, introduction to skilled trades. I completed the Non-Residential Drug Program and Drug
Abuse Program.
I have completed some college courses through Pierpoint Community College Business Plan Development,
Mentorship and Business, Business Analysis, Critical Thinking and Funding Your Venture, Intro to
Entrepreneurship. With the knowledge and education I have received from classes and training, I am
better equipped and prepared to re-enter society with a mindset to succeed. I am asking your
consideration for a second chance.
Thank you kindly,
LaShonda Hall
